Students from the Political Science program of the University of La Salette, Inc. (ULS) participated in a Special Service Learning session with Barangay Nabbuan officials, who served as resource speakers in a discussion titled “Local Government Realities: Understanding Community Governance,” held on May 15, 2026, at the SDG Center, CPD Building.

The said activity was conducted as part of the courses Seminar in Legislation, Philippine Politics and Governance, and Introduction to Political Theories, handled by Marjorie S. Magbitang, MPA. It is also a part of ULS continuing collaboration with Barangay Nabbuan, the university’s partner community, aimed at providing students with firsthand insights into grassroots governance and public service.
Serving as resource speakers were Hon. Ginalyn S. Bayaua, Kagawad for the Committee on Infrastructure and Sports representing Purok 5; Hon. Arlene T. Orial, Kagawad overseeing Health and Sanitation, VAWC, and BCPC for Purok 6; Hon. Mary Jane C. Mabuti, Kagawad for the Committee on Environment and Education representing Purok 1; and Hon. Rina Christelle Joy C. Cabotaje, SK Chairperson and Kagawad for youth development initiatives in the barangay.
Also present during the session were Aimee P. Calingasan, MAEd, OIC Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Bernard Joseph Ariola, CHRA, Director of the La Salette Pananagutan Center (LSPC), who supported the conduct of the activity.
During the knowledge‑sharing segment, the barangay officials discussed daily governance realities, common misconceptions about local government, actual decision‑making processes, and challenges in program implementation. An open forum followed, allowing Political Science students to raise questions and engage directly with the officials.

The engagement enabled students to connect theoretical discussions with real‑world governance practices, deepening their understanding of leadership, public service, and accountability at the barangay level.
University representatives said the session reflects ULS’s sustained partnership with Barangay Nabbuan, demonstrating how academic institutions and local government units can work together in strengthening civic education and community‑based learning.
