ULS Launches Phase 1 of Tarabay: Capacity Building Program for Barangay Health Workers

SANTIAGO CITY, PHILIPPINES — The University of La Salette, Inc. (ULS) successfully conducted Phase 1 of its ULS Tarabay: Capacity Building Program for Barangay Health Workers on July 5, 2025, from 7:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the ULS Exhibit Room, Ina ng Pag-asa Building.

The initiative was led by the Graduate School; the College of Nursing, Public Health and Midwifery (CONPHM); and the College of Medicine and Allied Medical Programs (CMAMP), in collaboration with the Community Extension Program Office – La Salette Pananagutan Center and supported by student-volunteers.

The program gathered 22 participants, consisting of Barangay Health Workers, School Health Officers, and Barangay Officials on Health from the partner communities—Barangay Cabulay and Barangay Nabbuan in Santiago City.

The Phase 1 sessions included:

  1. Community-Based Disease Prevention facilitated by Dr. Wifrido Simbul, Director for Health and Wellness.   
  2. Health Promotion and Education focusing on Dengue, Leptospirosis, and Rabies, delivered by Master of Science in Nursing students from the Graduate School: Fredmar Faustine M. Nitura, RN, LPT; Irene G. Verdillo, RN, LPT; Ellirose B. Acio, RN; and Ethel M. Oaña, RN.
  3. Salin-Kaalaman: Health Skills Training, a hands-on session led by students from CMAMP: Rachielle Tolentino, Janielle Agonoy, Glovelyn Gonzales, Marian Moscoso, EJ Mamaclay, and Lara Andres.

The implementing teams were headed by Dr. Madeilyn B. Estacio, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Graduate School; Mr. Bernard Joseph Ariola, Director for Community Extension and Outreach; Mr. Marvin Galicia, RN, extension coordinator for CONPHM; and Mr. Jefren Lloyd Gonzales, RMT, LPT, extension coordinator for CMAMP. Student-volunteers from CONPHM, CMAMP, and the College of Accountancy also assisted in carrying out the activities.

The event emphasized the importance of reinforcing grassroots health efforts to support Universal Health Care, community resilience, and collaborative wellness initiatives with the vision of strengthening ULS’s commitment to responsive and inclusive community engagement.
