Promoting Ethical Research: ULS Turnitin Training

The University of La Salette, Inc. (ULS) conducted an online orientation session on October 25, 2025, for graduate school students and faculty to introduce the use of Turnitin, a globally recognized platform for promoting academic integrity and originality in scholarly work. The session was facilitated by Dr. Bien Abad, Jr., Director of EMIS and Turnitin project lead.

The training aimed to familiarize participants with Turnitin’s core features and its role in supporting ethical academic writing. Students and faculty were guided on how to access the platform, submit papers, and interpret the similarity percentage in Turnitin reports. It was clearly noted by the facilitator that Turnitin is not an anti-plagiarism tool, but rather a supportive resource designed to help students avoid plagiarism and improve the originality of their work.

The session also reinforced the university’s AI Policy, emphasizing responsible use of AI tools in academic writing and research. Although the training was conducted online and did not include hands-on activities, it provided clear demonstrations and practical insights to help participants understand the value of Turnitin in maintaining academic integrity.

This initiative reflects ULS’s ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of honesty, excellence, and ethical scholarship across all academic levels. It also aligns with the university’s support for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

  • SDG 4: Quality Education
  • SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
  • SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals
